Personal Qualifications

When measuring your suitability for the career you might take a personal inventory. Be honest with yourself. Are you up to meeting the very high academic and personal demands of the work? Many physicians work 60 hour weeks on average, and the medical school curriculum is very tough, especially for the first two basic science years. For every hour of class or lab work that you put in, you should reserve at least that much and perhaps twice that amount in study -either at school or at home.

Ask yourself if you are really dedicated to serving the public. Are you willing to work the long work weeks and the interference with your own personal life and needs in order to take care of patients who may call you up in the middle of the night?

Can you withstand the ravages of patients who are dying of some incurable disease? Patients can often be unreasonable and very demanding on their physicians especially when they are in pain or not responding to treatment as expected. In such cases, you require considerable patience and composure to carry on your work.

Above all you must feel comfortable with people. Do you enjoy meeting strangers, people in all walks of life, whose beliefs, customs and language may differ from your own?

How are you under pressure? You may have several patients all of whom become sick at the same time, and it may be a strain to know which to handle first.

If you believe that you would be able to manage these types of situations then perhaps you should think further of pursuing a medical career. But if you have doubts, you might be better off channeling your interests into other careers which might not involve so much responsibility or pressure, such as physician assistant, medical technologist or physical, occupational or speech therapist.
